Dr Josh Byrne, environmental scientist and Research Fellow with Curtin University and the CRC for Low Carbon Living is on a mission to find out how we can increase housing density in Australia through truly livable, affordable and sustainable developments. So far Josh’s journey has seen him visit some of the most inspiring medium to high density housing projects in Australia that are leading the way forward. Now he will follow a new project right from the start to get a clear picture of what it takes to do density really well.
WGV by LandCorp is a medium density zero carbon residential development of around 100 dwellings. When completed it will have its own cutting edge solar powered micro electricity grid, water saving initiatives that will reduce mains water use by 60%, as well as thoughtful integrated landscaping.
This latest episode of Density by Design explores the background to the project, how it came about, and what the team behind it are hoping to achieve. We’ll take a close look at the urban design principles underpinning the development and examine the planning mechanisms and design controls put in place to deliver on the vision of a diverse, medium-density, highly livable residential precinct. Informed by early research by Curtin University and the CRC for Low Carbon Living, we’ll find out what sets this project apart from others around Australia.
Density by Design is supported by the CRC for Low Carbon Living in partnership with Curtin University, LandCorp, City of Fremantle and Josh Byrne & Associates. The video series is produced by VAM MEDIA and Directed by Brendan Hutchens.
